McDonalds: Training Video
Brief
To produce a training application to enhance employee productivity at McDonalds, focusing in particular on the way staff are positioned around the kitchen and the time taken to serve customers during peak times.
Solution
To gain a better understanding of the McDonald's Bridge Operating Platform (BOP) line, members of the BrandNew team spent some time behind the counters themselves cooking burgers and fries as well as serving customers. By stepping into crew member's shoes the designers we able to get to grips with the working process and how they could best demonstrate the kitchen environment in a digital space.
After the experimental learning session, the design team created an interactive training flash application rather than a regular traditional training video. In order to maximise employee engagement, a 3D animated McDonald's employee called Nick was created to act as a guide throughout the video and an interactive 3D model of a McDonald's kitchen was created to give users the means to access information about each of the food preparation units.
A short interactive quiz completes the training video. Users can drag the different employee roles around the kitchen and position them in the correct place at the appropriate time of day. The results of the quiz are then uploaded onto an online database where McDonald's managers can view and track how their employees are performing.
Result
The client was very happy with the result and the training programme was introduced to restaurants on 1 May. Early indications show that the training programme is being well recieved by managers and crew.
